Mile of Prevention fund-raiser planned

Staffers are busily preparing for a unique fund-raiser for October that will not only raise the profile of the organization, but also help continue the mission of providing drug prevention education to youngsters throughout the region. “A Mile of Prevention” encourages donors of all ages to help DHCSAP raise one mile’s worth of quarters in donations and help wrap downtown Dothan in one mile of red ribbon. In other words, DHCSAP is looking to raise $15,840 in contributions to help futher the mission of drug-prevention education for youngsters. “This is a very unique project to undertake,” says Susan Trawick, Executive Director of DHCSAP. “I don’t think anyone has ever wrapped downtown in anything.”

The event, scheduled for Monday, October 26, will kick off at 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Main Street and N. Oates Street (US 231), in front of the courthouse. From the courthouse, the ribbon will travel along the sidewalk up N. Oates to the County Administration Tower and turn onto Newton Street. From there, the ribbon will turn back onto St. Andrews Street to Main Street where it will wrap back to the courthouse.
“That’s one mile,” said Jeffery Biggs, community outreach coordinator for DHCSAP. “It will have a tremendous impact on the community’s thinking. One mile of red ribbon wrapping downtown. It’s unavoidable. You have to look at it.”

In addition to the wrapped ribbon, a gigantic red ribbon loop will be hung from the County Administration Building for the remainder of Red Ribbon Month. The event will be capped off with a small celebration in the Dothan Civic Center Parking Lot recognizing all the sponsors of the “Mile of Prevention” and to celebrate the positive lifestyles of being substance free.

In order for the event to be a success though, a lot of hardwork is taking place behind the scenes.

“We realize this is a difficult time for fundraising,” Biggs said. “However, we’re not asking for a lot of money from any one individual or business. We’re asking for a mile of quarters. To sponsor one foot of red ribbon it only takes $3. That’s less than the cost of a kids meal at a fast food restaurant -or a cup of coffee at some coffee houses. Everyone can spare some change, and all of that adds up to the one mile. We’re asking businesses to donate a day’s worth of change from their vending machines, kids to bring their spare change to school and drop it in the bucket, other businesses or individuals to sponsor a foot or more. It all will add up and make a tremendous difference in our ability to continue to provide drug prevention education throughout Houston County -and expand our programs to schools and grade levels we currently are not working in directly.”
